Krabi, Thailand is home to some of the most striking scenery in Southeast Asia. From the world famous Phi Phi Islands (home of the movie The Beach) to the towering limestone cliffs of Railey Bay, Krabi offers the tourist and resident alike a multitude of activities. Kayaking through caves and mangrove forests is always enchanting and the rock climbing in Railey is world class. The numerous caves and temples will keep one busy for weeks, or just relaxing at the hot springs is a year round attraction. With over 100 islands, sailing, fishing and sightseeing boat rides are in constant demand, while the scuba diving is at the top of many people’s list. Recognizing its beauty and numerous attractions, Ao Nang Beach, the central beach district in Krabi, was voted the 2nd most beautiful beach in the world by Expedia.com.au, the Australian arm of the global online travel company Expedia Inc.
The infrastructure in Krabi is excellent, the roads are well maintained and public water and electric supply efficient. The Krabi International Airport, which opened in 2006, has just completed the new international terminal. This expansion allows for additional direct flights from Europe and Asia to complement the current flights from Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Already flights are arriving from Shanghai, Seoul and Moscow, with more cities in the planning.
While Krabi has maintained its natural feel, it offers excellent shopping with Big C, Makro and Tesco Lotus Superstores in town. An international hospital is near completion, and a large marina will begin construction in 2013. All the major international resorts (Sheraton, Sofitel, Ritz-Carlton, Amari) are located here, offering excellent restaurant facilities and even a private 9 hole golf course.
In Thailand it is not possible for foreigners to own land, and they may only own freehold in registered condominiums which are limited to 49% foreign ownership. The established method for a foreigner to take possession of a stand alone home is through a long term lease on the land. The 30 year lease is registered at the Krabi Provincial Land Department, and the house may be registered in the foreigner’s name. An additional contract is written for 2 additional renewals of 30 years to make a total of 90 years. Long term leases, or leasehold, are the standard method of taking possession of apartments as well.
